At the heart of Alghero is the Citta Vecchia, an old town enclosed in stonewall and surrounded with watchtowers. In over two hours, you can explore the old churches, palaces, museums, and piazzas by foot. To the north stretches a three-mile beach overlooking the beautiful Grotta di Nettuno.

Alghero cuisine is an exciting mix of Catalan and traditional Italian. Most of the restaurants here are casual and laid-back and the prices reasonable. Il Pavone Ristorante, one of the restaurants I thoroughly enjoyed, was also the most unassuming in terms of décor and ambiance. Here, they care more about the food than being chic and trendy. In this island, you simply want to kick off your shoes, feel the sand on your feet and eat fresh lobster with your hands.
