Flight Information: Etihad Airways EY 428 - Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Manila (MNL) - Business Class Flight Review

Etihad Airways, the flag carrier of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, operates more than 1000 flights in a week to destinations spread across 46 countries. The main base of Etihad Airways is Abu Dhabi International Airport. (Click here to read our Abu Dhabi resort and restaurant reviews and click here to read our Manila hotel and restaurant reviews.)

Check-In: We arrived at the Abu Dhabi airport well ahead of the scheduled flight time. Our check-in was done quickly and efficiently.

The Lounge: After a speedy check-in, we decided to check out the airline’s business class lounge as we had ample time on our hands. The lounge was very busy and crowded and it was very difficult to find a seat. The internet was not working at the lounge. This seems to be the case every single time I am at this lounge.

First Impressions: There was no dedicated business class line for boarding. However, when we asked if we could board, the staff let us in the line. So at least we got some perk for our business class ticket.

Once on board, the cabin crew escorted us to our seats and took our drink orders. We were served semi-chilled Champagne as soon as we were settled in. A pillow and blanket were already waiting for us. Magazines, newspapers, the lunch menu and an amenity kit were provided. The amenity kit consisted of just socks, eyeshades and toothbrush.

The Cabin: A Boeing 777-300, this plane was showing signs of wear and tear and looked a bit run down. The seating configuration followed a pattern of two in the middle close together and then the next two in the middle further apart. I found the middle seats too close for comfort though. I really would not be comfortable if the person in the seat next to me was a stranger.

The seats do recline almost flat out but are extremely narrow. If you have a long flight and decide to sleep, these seats might prove to be uncomfortable. Luckily for me, the flight time was just 7 hours and 50 minutes.

The cabin followed a color scheme of light sea foam green and beige. Ample overhead space was available for carryon luggage.

The Flight (Service/Food/Drink): After take-off, the flight attendant came and offered us Champagne along with a small falafel and cheese stick.

The lunch service started soon after take-off. The a la carte menu offered a number of choices. In addition to the a la carte menu, Etihad Airways also offered a selection of dishes that can be ordered anytime during the flight from Abu Dhabi to Manila.

Soon after we had given our order, we were served shrimp, a salad and bread basket. The bread was warm and fresh out of the oven. The shrimp and salad were presented beautifully.

The tomato basil soup served next was very salty and not so impressive. For the main course, we ordered the grilled beef tenderloin with brown jus, wasabi mashed potatoes and buttered carrots. This dish tasted great. A cheese plate consisting of three cheeses and some ugly tasting crackers were served next.

For dessert, we opted for the Trio of desserts consisting of low fat lemon and blackberry cheesecake, apple and raisin brioche pudding and a vanilla custard fondue. The low fat lemon and blackberry cheesecake was quite delicious.

The wine selection was limited to just three whites and three reds. However, a variety of spirits and liquors were available along with three choices of beers.

The complete Etihad Airways menu is available here.

After lunch, I checked out their Video On Demand system. It was more than enough to keep a person busy. They also had a nice selection of TV shows (some oldies like Mary Tyler Moore) and a ton of new hits.

Arrival: The flight arrived on-time. The immigration process was a breeze. Also, our bags were the first to come off, which is always nice.

Overall Impression The flight crew were attentive and the nice selection of TV shows and magazines kept me occupied during the flight. However, the salty soup and the ugly tasting crackers served during lunch and a general run down feeling inside the plane makes us give this Etihad Airways Business Class Flight a rating of Between Bombastic and Not.
