Quality Casual Dining

Papa’s Living Restaurant – Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic: Papa’s Living Restaurant is as casual as its name implies. It’s not the place to impress a date or to hold a business meeting but the wonderful view alone is enough to make it a place worth visiting. The large terrace along the river makes Papa’s an ideal place for lunch on a beautiful summer afternoon.

The menu is Italian-American with varied options including pizzas, burgers, salads and sandwiches. We went there for lunch and tried their grilled corn on the cob, Pizza Quatrro, and Lasagna al Forno.

The corn looked sweet and juicy but tasted tough and old, making me suspect it had been sitting around in the kitchen for quite some time. The pizza was divided into four sections of different toppings—pepperoni, salami, ham and mushroom, and artichokes; just like the traditional pizzas from Napoli, the crust was thin with the toppings sparsely distributed. Surprisingly, it was good.

The lasagna was the best. While the portion was only medium sized, it was oh-so-filling! For an informal restaurant, the lasagna was first-rate.

Service was OK, but for a casual place like this, we didn’t expect much more. Reservations are highly recommended, especially in the summer when Cesky Krumlov is busy.

What I liked: The lasagna al forno.

What I didn’t like: The grilled corn on the cob.

Rating: Between bombastic and not.
