A must visit when in Tokyo

Robataya – Tokyo, Japan Recommended by our hotel as a must visit restaurant, we had our doubts about Robataya thinking that it might be some kind of tourist trap. The whooping cheers of the staff further reinforced those doubts when we entered the restaurant. We feared it might be all part of one big gimmick, but since we were already there, we figured we might as well try it.

The layout of Robataya is similar to other sushi bars, where seats are located around the bar of the restaurant with a smorgasbord of fresh food – from seafood to vegetables -- laid out in front of us. But unlike regular sushi bars, in Robataya, the food was arranged pretty much like it would in a seafood market. Which was not necessarily a bad thing, mind you.

What made our stay an even more unique experience were the two boisterous and entertaining chefs behind the bar. They didn’t look like they were working; in fact, it looked like they were having more fun than the customers! And it was infectious.

We selected from the cornucopia of fresh foodstuffs what we wanted to try, and we ended up getting the oysters, fish, and lobster. The oysters were HUGE! Too huge for my taste as they were too big and meaty, and I can’t honestly say I remotely enjoyed them. However, the experience of trying them was enjoyable.

The fish and lobster were great. Fresh and well prepared. I can’t say it was amazing, but the overall experience was top-notch. Sure it was a little touristy, as we expected, but it was a good thing we didn’t stay away, because it was an experience like none other.

In all, the Robataya was a hit for us. A Bombastic hit.

What I liked: The food, unique experience

What I didn’t like: A little touristy

Rating: Bombastic
