Kempinski Hotel - Amman, Jordan

First Impression/Lobby - Walking into the Kempinski hotel did not give me the feeling that this was going to be anything special, especially after coming back from the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar at the Dead Sea. The lobby of the hotel was fairly small and plain. It did not have the feel and the grandiose aura that you get when you walk into a Four Seasons Hotel.

Reception - Reception at the Kempinski Hotel Amman, was about all you can hope for from a hotel; fast and efficient, things were ready, our room was ready, it was just a matter of getting imprints of the credit cards and a small amount of paperwork to be completed

The Room - After seeing of plainness of the lobby downstairs, I was a bit shocked to see how beautiful our room was. Beautiful dark reds and golds and blues blended beautifully, making for a large, elegant and spacious junior suite. One of my favorite things about the room at the Kempinski Hotel was the small hallway between the bedroom and the bathroom giving you plenty of space for your luggage and a closet and drawers for your clothes.

Concierge - Concierge service at the Kempinski hotel was definitely not five-star and probably not even four-star. I called to ask about a great place to eat preferably sushi. We were given a name and a telephone number and told to call them ourselves to find out about it. I can't say I've ever had a concierge do that before. I also had left messages that were never returned, in a nutshell, the concierge service was pretty much useless.

Pool/Spa/Gym - The Spa and the health club were average sized. The locker room was very small; great design and "super clean" are not adjectives I would use to describe it.

Restaurant - The only restaurant that we tried at the Kempinski hotel was the morning breakfast buffet. They had a decent selection for a three star hotel however; the Kempinski calls itself, upscale and luxurious. I would have expected a larger variety, better presentation, and better service. The morning buffet here reminded me of something I would see at a three-star Comfort Inn. They easily had five or six people working, or should I say, running back-and-forth. The funny thing is trying to get service was pretty near impossible.

Overall Impression - My overall impression of the Kempinski Hotel - Amman was primarily one of disappointment. I once thought to myself, you can judge the quality of a hotel based upon their iron and ironing board.

In the case of the Kempinski, both the iron and the board looked nice. However, the first iron they brought me leaked and the second one left marks on a clothes, the third one finally did work fine. The ironing board, worked fine from the very beginning. So what am I trying to say? Basically the foundation for the hotel is pretty good. The mechanics of it and the little thing though are not working 100%.

With that said, would I come back to Kempinski? I think the only way I would stay here again, is if I were to be transported from the front door to my room and didn't half to deal with anything or anyone, that would be bombastic. So no, next time in Amman, I will be checking out somewhere new.
