Taybet Zaman Resort Hotel - Petra, Jordan

Taybet Zaman Resort Hotel - Petra, Jordan - Listed as a 5 Star hotel Taybet Zaman, a Sofitel property, did not live up to 5 star standards. Situated in the mountains above Petra, Taybet Zaman is a very unique resort but it falls short in service and accommodations.

I visited the resort during the off-season so I'm not sure how much that plays into my experience however some of their shortcomings I don't think have anything to do with the season.

The resort is designed as an old Arab village; a great concept but it takes more than that to be five star. Taybet Zaman boasts two restaurants, a disco, a bakery, a billiard hall, pool, health club and hammam. This all sounds great but when we were there most everything was closed. Again, during high season, maybe it's a different story. If you book, be sure to confirm ahead of time, what will be in operation.

Had everything been open, Taybet Zaman still would not have risen to the level of five star. The rooms were small and looking pretty run down and tired. Everything from the bathroom amenities, to the TV, to the bed and linens was more three star.

Reception was polite and friendly, the lobby, small, old and out-dated. Room service was efficient but again, not five star. The quality of the food; well, lets just say when you are that far away from town, how picky can you be?

Did I mention that Taybet Zaman was about 15 minutes outside of Petra? Normally I don't mind when a resort is outside of town (actually, I do prefer it that way) but in this case when there wasn't much operating, I felt like I was stranded at a cheap hotel in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on a cold and snowy February night.

All in all, Taybet Zaman in Petra is not a resort I would recommend at this point. I will go back and check it during high season some time but right now, I'd say skip it and stay at the Movenpick in town.
