Chinese Embassy in Kuwait

What a Waste of a Morning

Chinese Embassy - Kuwait: After a recent visit to the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait I had to write about the completely negative experience I had with them.

I checked their website and then called their number, gathering the information needed to get my tourist visa for China. I dutifully completed the application, gathered my picture and my passport and headed out to the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait, which only has visa office hours from 9-12 Sunday through Thursday.

Upon entering the visa section (the only place the public can enter) I saw two lines, one for new visa and one to pick up your completed visa.

I waited in the “new visa” line and after about 30 minutes, I got to the front of the line, only to be told rudely, (by the actual Chinese Consular of Kuwait) that I had filled out the wrong application. I told her, this is the one that I downloaded, just night, mind you, from their own website. She didn’t care, and just gave me the application and said fill it out and come back.

So, I scrambled to find a pen and sat down to fill out almost the same form all over again. I got back in line and after waiting another 20 minutes, I got to the wonderful, cheerful and welcoming Consular again, only to be told that I needed a copy of the passport photo page.

I asked, “why didn’t you tell me that when I was up here last time” and she pointed to the myriad of notes taped to the wall and said “read”. By now, I was even more excited about my upcoming trip to China! NOT!

So, I headed out to my car to find a place to get a copy of my passport. It’s hard to believe the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait does not have a copied, for goodness sake, doesn’t China make 99% of the copiers in the world!?

So, around the corner to the Yarmouk Co-Op I went to find a place to make a copy. 100 fils later, I was back in line. Another 30 minutes in line and finally I got to turn in my application, picture, passport, ID and that most important paper, a copy of my picture page from my passport. I was given my receipt and instructions to pay the application fee at NBK (one more stop needed). Both the receipt for my application and the receipt that I made payment at NBK would be needed to retrieve my visa when it was completed.

With that said, I guess what I learned, is to not trust the website, do not trust the telephone message they have and to plan on spending a full day at the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait when you go to apply for your visa to China.

The funny thing about it is I saw numerous people go through exactly what I did. You would think the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait would wise up and update their website and telephone instructions. Maybe then, the Chinese Consular to Kuwait wouldn’t be so unwelcoming.

** As a note, what I finally had to take to the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait to get my visa to China was a completed application (the one on-line I had was wrong), your photo ID or residency, showing at least six months as a residence ( I watched two people get turned away for not having that), a passport photo (take two just to be safe), a copy of your passport photo page (I saw numerous people get turned away for that) and your passport.
