Crimson Garden Italian Restaurant @ Spoons - Mahboula, Kuwiat: This is the second restaurant, the first is in Avenues Mall.

It was a gorgeous afternoon so I invited a friend to lunch and headed to Spoons to give Crimson Garden a try. Now, I don’t have a lot of experience with Iranian food, aka, Persian food, so this was going to be a bit of a learning experience for me.

I was there early enough that none of the restaurants at Spoons were very busy. We grabbed one of their outside tables (they have about half a dozen tables outside) and got settled in. The outside area was very typical of most of the restaurants in Kuwait with outdoor seating; metal tables and chairs, and umbrellas for the needed shade.

Inside though was not quite so ordinary: light blonde wood floors, steel gray granite walls, wood tables and chairs, and a big, fluffy wall covering the lower part of one wall gave Crimson Garden a rather chic feel to it. Had it not been so nice outside, I think I would have enjoyed the inside as well.

The menu, for someone not adept to Iranian fare was a bit overwhelming: soups, hot and cold appetizers, grills (chicken, lamb and seafood), main dishes and rice. My head started to spin! While we looked at the menu, we were served fresh Iranian bread and a small variety of appetizers to nibble on.

Luckily our waiter must have been used to novices like me and helped me make sense of all that was offered and I place my order for Jo soup, lamb kebab and rice. My friend, who’s experience with Iranian food was evident as he quickly picked the Adas (lentil soup) and Fessenjan Ba Goosht, lamb shoulder in stew with walnuts and pomegranate sauce.

My soup, the Jo was made with barley, chicken broth, carrot, celery, fresh herbs and cream. Delicious, delicious, delicious. I tasted my friend’s Adas, green lentil soup with chicken broth and tomato. After tasting both soups, I can say that the Jo is the way to go!

Our main courses came out shortly thereafter. My kebabs were huge (I was suddenly happy I didn’t get carried away with the bread). I excitedly took a bite and was immediately hooked. GREAT! Or, should I say, BOMBASTIC! Full of flavor, tender and almost addicting, I was happy I tried them. The rice was almost as flavorful (one with pistachio and the other with almonds and pomegranate), but was a little dry. I wished I had taken the waiter’s suggestion and ordered a side of sauce. Whether this dish was worth the 6.200 KD ($22+ USD) price is very debatable.

My friends lamb shoulder stew was served with rice and made for a fulfilling lunch for him. I tried the gravy and while it was good, it had bit of a bitter flavor. The lamb though, was uber tender. His dish got two thumbs up!

Full from the large portions, bread and rice, we skipped desert, although their Saffron Ice Cream almost tempted to the point of ordering.
After my experience of Iranian food at Crimson Garden, I am pretty sure I have a new cuisine to add to my list of favorites.

We give Crimson Garden Iranian Restaurant a rating of Bombastic!
