Ying Yang is So-So

Ying Yang Asian Restaurant at the Hilton: Of all the restaurants in Kuwait, The Blue Elephant had always been my favorite Thai restaurant in Kuwait. The new Yin Yang Restaurant replaced The Blue Elephant recently at the Hilton Kuwait Resort. We decided to drop in for a quick experience of what the Yin Yang Restaurant brought to the table. The concept of the restaurant is drawn around the theme of Yin and Yang where the coexistent of both the extremes depended on each other; here the Yin represented the traditional Thai cuisine crafted by Chef Adisak Thongpak and the Yang signified the delicately flavored Chinese cuisine created by Chef Liang Ming.

The First Impression: The immediate feeling on entering the Yin Yang Restaurant is that the décor has remained pretty much unchanged. A glance at the menu told us that the Thai section of the food has been considerably reduced after being taken over by the new management.

Décor and Ambience: The décor and ambience of The Yin Yang Restaurant though quite similar to The Blue Elephant was nevertheless interesting. Tropical foliage decked the walls bringing in a feeling of nature into the dining area enhanced by an indoor lake. Articrafts from Asia accentuated the visual display of pagoda roofs. The tables were set with exotic flowers and flanked by bamboo chairs. There was a pretty outside dining area attached to the restaurant.

The Food: The Yin Yang Restaurant is one of the few upscale Thai and Chinese Restaurant in Kuwait. Since we went as a group, we managed to sink our teeth into a variety of different dishes, thus getting a taste of everything. We started with some delicious sounding appetizers; the Thai Spring Rolls, Paper Prawns and Grilled Chicken Satay. While the dishes were good, they weren’t remarkable and not even as good as the dishes were when it was still The Blue Elephant. This was surprising considering that one of the chefs was the same one who was in charge before the change happened.

I moved onto my main course order of the Prawn Curry; a spicy yellow Thai curry of prawns flavored with coconut milk and spring onions. I also got to taste my friends’ order of Lamb Curry (slowly braised lamb with potatoes and cashew nuts) and the Red Chicken Curry (Chicken in spicy red curry with sweet basil, potatoes and roasted onions). While the food was definitely good, my opinion of them missing that extra wow factor remained unchanged. For dessert I chose the Crispy Banana Roll with vanilla ice cream. Satisfying but not scrumptious.

The menu offered choices of Thai and Chinese cuisine, but had nothing different or intriguing about it. The overall quality of food was average and didn’t blow us away.

The Patio: The outside patio of the Yin Yang Restaurant gathered a few brownie points from us. With a beautiful view of the pagoda architecture of the restaurant and a gorgeous view of the sea, this was a place to relax in and have a nice meal with friends and family. The atmosphere it lent definitely was better than the other restaurants in Kuwait.

The Calculated Impression: The overall impression of the Yin Yang Restaurant was just O.K. While it is definitely one of the nicer Thai and Chinese Restaurant in Kuwait, it definitely hasn’t improved with management change which left me wishing it was still The Blue Elephant Thai Restaurant.

What I liked: The décor and the outside patio.

What I didn’t like: The average quality of food, the limited Thai menu and the fact that the restaurant was open only for dinner.

Rating: Between Bombastic and Not
