Sassorosso Italian Restaurant and Wine Retailer - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Located at 9 Lorong YapKwan Seng in Kuala Lumpur, Sassorosso was a just what we were looking for in a restaurant. Trendy, chic, not to loud with a beautiful, contemporary decor and a great wine list plus seating indoors and out. Perfect!

With a view of the glassed wine cellar to one side and the beautiful patio on the other, I was set for a beautiful dinner.

Starting the evening with an apéritif gave us a good indication of what to expect with the service to come. A bit slow and not as polished as the decor would lead you to believe it would be based on how great they tasted.

Our next course, brought out mere minutes later was a spicy baby scrumptious. We were starting to feel rushed so we asked they give us more time between octopus soup. Spicy, but not overbearing and the octopus was fresh, tender and scrumptious. We were starting to feel rushed so we asked they give us more time between courses, this however, did not seem to work in our favor.

When they brought out the next course, spinach gnocchi in a creamy cheese and walnut sauce, which we split, it appeared to have spent some time hanging out in the kitchen waiting to be served. The pasta was hard and dry like it was taken out of water to keep from cooking. No complaints on the sauce, but the pasta was a disappointment.

The main course of lamb cutlets continued our disappointment. Over-cooked and much dryer than I had expected when I requested it to be medium-rare. Was it the fact we requested more time between courses or was it the new cooking method the manager said they used this time that caused it to be dry? I will never know. All I know is the expectations we had at the beginning of the dinner were fading fast.

The final disappointment was the chocolate cake. Recommended to us and described as having a warm, soft, white chocolate center (something we had not had heard of before) we just knew this was something we had to have. However, when it came out, we cut into it excited to see the warm, white chocolate center that was so richly described to us. To our disappointment, it was the standard dark chocolate center we have seen at dozens of restaurants before.

Yes, it was delicious, but not what was described and recommended to us. When we questioned the waiter, he checked with the chef and we found out (from the chef) that the white chocolate had been replaced weeks ago. Our loss, apparently it was not meant to be.

Our experience was mixed. When they were good, they excelled however there just a few to many things that kept Sassorosso from being bombastic. Even though Sassorosso did not reach the level of bombastic, it is one place that I would try it again if I were Kuala Lumpur.
