Madre Tierra - Playa del Carmen: Madre Tierra is located in the heart of 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Situated on the second floor under a beautiful palapa, this restaurant offers a lovely view of 5th Avenue and is ideal for people watching.

We were expecting Madre Tierra to be an upscale restaurant since it was highly recommended to us by the Fairmont Mayakoba. However, it turned out to be a very casual restaurant. The diners consisted of an equal mix of locals as well as tourists. The décor followed a simple yet appealing rustic style.

We started our dinner with the Guacamole and Tuna Sashimi. Prepared at our table, the Guacamole was excellent. Medium cut with pineapple and a special soy sauce, the sashimi was equally delicious. I tried the Tortilla Soup, Mexican cuisine’s most representative soup. The soup was ok, but I have definitely had better.

For the main course, I opted for the Mignon Fillet while my partner ordered the Lobster Spaghetti. The Mignon Fillet consisted of soft beef wrapped in bacon. Since it was served on a super hot platter, the beef continued to cook and my medium rare ended up being medium. Moreover, there was little or no amount of flavor. Needless to say, this dish was a major disappointment. I tried to order mashed potatoes along with this, but they didn’t have any. I asked whether they could just boil some fresh potatoes and mash them. But our waiter didn’t seem to like this suggestion and refused to do this. So much for taking care of the customer I guess.

The Lobster Spaghetti consisted of sautéed lobster with white wine sauce, fresh tomato and a touch of garlic. Since it looked a bit bland upon arrival, my partner asked the staff to add a little tomato sauce to make this dish a bit more robust. After this addition, the dish became excellent in terms of flavor. The staff spent a lot of time watching the television (the World Series was playing). In my opinion, the service suffered a lot because of this.

Overall the food at Madre Tierra was decent at best. I really liked the guacamole and loved the sashimi but didn’t care for my beef. However, both of us enjoyed the lobster spaghetti. The inconsistency in the taste and flavor of dishes makes us give this restaurant a rating of Almost Bombastic.

What I liked: The guacamole and the sashimi

What I didn’t like: The too casual ambience

Rating: Almost Bombastic
