Ritz Carlton - Cancun, Mexico

Situated along the beach, the Ritz Cancun takes full advantage of Cancun’s white sand beaches and offers a majestic view of Mexico’s alluring Mayan coastline.
Since they are also famous for their award-winning restaurants, we anticipated this had the makings of a Bombastic experience.

The ride from the airport took approximately 25 minutes and cost $64.00. We paid for the yellow taxi inside the airport and showed our receipt to the employee outside who arranged for our ride to the Ritz Cancun.

First Impression/Lobby: Upon arriving to the hotel, we were promptly met by the bellman who, within minutes, had our bags out of the taxi and was showing us to the front desk.

As can be expected from luxury hotels, the Ritz Cancun is huge. The lobby was decked in marble and comfortable chairs and sofas were placed over elegantly designed Victorian carpets. The chandeliers added a nice touch to the feel of the hotel.

Reception: Our check in would’ve gone smoothly if it weren’t for the fact that my credit card was blocked as I was unable to notify the credit card company that I would be vacationing in Mexico. The front desk agent dutifully connected me to the credit card company and the matter was quickly resolved. The bellman escorted us to our room.

It’s important to note that they do not give change in American dollars, just pesos.

The Room: Our room was very standard; what one would expect from a Ritz Carlton. The room was spacious, and the furniture was comfortable but it all felt quite dates. If you’ve stayed at any of their other hotels, you will immediately feel at home here.

From the balcony, we had an unobstructed view of the ocean as well as one of the hotel’s pool. We were able to enjoy an amazing sunrise (6:30 when we were here) from the comfort of our room.

Room Service: The Ritz Cancun offers a well-rounded menu of Western and Mexican favorites. We were able to enjoy tacos, burritos, and tortilla soup from the comfort of our room. Their pasta, salads, and burgers were also very good. I can say we were pleased with everything we ordered. The bellman did a good job of setting up our dinner in our room.

Housekeeping: We were pleased with the Ritz Cancun’s housekeeping service. The hotel’s staff was very efficient and quick to respond to our requests. The daily and evening service was completed to five-star standards.

Concierge: The hotel concierge was a bit of a letdown for us. Information wasn’t readily available and the young lady at the concierge would often have to call on others to answer our questions. To her credit, she did call back in a timely fashion. That being said, simple things like where to get a SIM card should not involve research.

Restaurants: The hotel’s award-winning restaurants definitely lived up to our expectations. They had diverse offerings of sumptuous and creatively executed dishes. However, it should be noted that they have a $35 corkage fee.

Pool/Spa/Activities: The Ritz Cancun has a beautifully shaped pool that offers a great view of Cancun’s white sand beach. As for the poolside service, it could definitely use some improvement. We found their staff to be extremely slow.

The beach area was gorgeous and had lots of space for people to spread out. We particularly enjoyed the white sand as it made for a picturesque view of the sea. Their lounge chairs, however, looked battered and weathered.

Check-Out: Our checkout was quick and painless. With the bill correct, it was just a matter of swiping the card, signing a few receipts and we were on our way.

Overall Impression: Overall The Ritz Cancun is nice and has a beautiful location, but it is sorely in need of an update. The hotel “old” feel to it that was somewhat off-putting. Also, the service was not up to the Ritz Carlton level in many areas. We gave it an Almost Bombastic rating.
