Restaurant Excelsior - Amsterdam, Holland: Located in Hotel de l'Europe, is the top-rated, fine dining restaurant, Restaurant Excelsior.

I had read that jackets were required but once at the hotel they told me they had relaxed the dress code and jackets for men was no longer a requirement. As I walked in to the restaurant, I was happy I still opted to wear a suit. Restaurant Excelsior exudes a refined formality. With crisp linens, crystal chandeliers, fresh flowers, fine china and live piano music playing in the background, I would have felt out of place without my suit and tie.

Restaurant Excelsior has an extensive wine list and offers a more than ample array of starters and entrees. To start, I recommend the Dublin Prawns with Fennel Salad or the Lobster with Saffron Pasta. For my main course I had the Seabass in a Shrimp Bouillon. It was good, but I wished I had went with the Scottish Beef. I had the chance to taste that and it was devine! For desert I had the Lavender, Crème Brûlée. Words cannot describe what the hint of lavender can do to the taste buds.

If you have a room in the hotel which has a balcony and a beautiful view ovelooking the canals and Amstel River, have your desert delivered to your room. The perfect way to end a perfect evening is with a great desert, coffee and an after dinner cocktail, all on the privacy of your own balcony, it is bombastic!

Service at Restaurant Excelsior matches the refined formality of the décor and the quality and presentation of their dishes. They offer true five-star service in a warm and welcoming manner. The restaurant staff knows how to take an outstanding atmosphere and dinner and make it even better. It is no wonder why this restaurant is so highly acclaimed in Amsterdam.

Reservations are highly recommended, especially on the weekends. Be sure to request the window seat in the corner. All the window seats offer great views of the Amstel River and the Munt Tower but the corner seat offers the most privacy.
