Westin Sydney Hotel - Sydney, Australia: Situated in one of the most ideal locations for travel, leisure and business, the Westin Sydney Hotel is just a short distance to many shops, restaurants, parks and tourist spots such as the Sydney Opera House, the Darling Harbour and the Harbour Bridge.

First Impression/Lobby: Standing outside the Westin Sydney hotel, I would never have believed that its turn of the century design and its Big Ben-like clock tower is secretly hiding a modern interior.

When I walked into the Westin, I was greeted by a welcome surprise; a modern and elegant, upscale and chic design lobby. It gave the Westin a feeling of living in quiet luxury without being too ostentatious or bold.

The design of all of public areas in the hotel allows for a lot of natural light to come in, as evidenced by its atrium with glass ceilings. This factor gives the entire hotel a bright and airy feel, a very contemporary approach that most definitely gives the place a wow factor.

The clean lines in the interior design of the hotel and the elegant details gives it a polished look that is sure to stand the test of time.

Reception: Reception was a breeze as the receptionist was friendly, fast and capable, an admirable trait as the hotel is normally overbooked during this time of the year. Settling in was just as easy since efficiency seemed to be something that the staff had already mastered, which is truly something to be appreciated when you’re only staying a few days in Sydney and don’t want to waste your time getting settled.

The Suite: The suite echoes the modern design in the lobby and the general areas of the hotel with its clean lines, lots of natural light entering the room and contemporary colors and details.

The room has the signature Westin Heavenly Beds, which is something to highlight as the point of a stay is not just to enjoy your surroundings but also to get a good night’s sleep. The beddings were luxurious and ones you definitely would never want to leave.

The bathroom has a glass wall that allows guests to see into the main room, making the entire room seem a little bigger than it really is and allowing guests to enjoy their bath with a view of the city. But if you have a need for privacy, there is a shade that can be drawn. The shower has good pressure and the shampoos and other amenities actually smelled good and were not bad to use.

It has to be said that for the price, the guest room is a little on the small side and apart from its glass divider opening into the bedroom and the comfortable bed; it wasn’t particularly inspiring or awe-inducing. It has the requisite bed, table, chair and all the usual amenities to be found in a hotel, but not really that much more, a bit of a disappointment for a luxury hotel like the Westin.

Room Service: Room service meals were prompt, delicious and very nicely presented. The quality of the food and service was top-notch and for price being charged, I expected nothing less and they definitely delivered.

Housekeeping: The rooms were well-cared for and well-maintained. It has to be said that they were polished and spotless, a feat which is to be admired as much of the room is in white, glass and marble-all requiring a lot of cleaning and polishing to look perfect.

Concierge: The concierge service was very helpful, recommending the several restaurants including Kingsley’s Steakhouse, which ultimately became my choice, one that I was happy to have made.

Restaurants: Breakfast in the Mosaic restaurant was quite something, there was a lot of food to choose from and all of them were artfully presented. The temptation to come back for more is truly hard to resist.

If you’re a fan of steak, Kingsley's Steakhouse is still one of the best in the world, retaining its spot despite the number of years that it has been in business.

Pool/Spa/Activities: The pool was a little bit of a disappointment. I just did not match the upscale feel that the rest of the Westin had; plus it was quite small for a hotel of Westin’s size.

The gym is run independently of the hotel and the hotel room has a few signs reminding guests to bring their own towels in order not to be charged a towel fee, which I appreciated. If you’re they type who really likes to work out, this is the type of gym you would want to go to as it is fully equipped with the latest gym equipment. The fact that it is independent of the hotel means that there are also a lot of locals who are working out too; this has its own set of pros and cons.

Overall Impression Overall, The Westin Sydney Hotel is a Bombastic hotel. It delivers great service, good amenities and a wonderful location to base oneself in while exploring Sydney. It is near parks, restaurants and shopping areas as well as business districts. The service is excellent and the staff is helpful and efficient despite being fully booked.

Although it may need a little improvement in its pool and in the size of its rooms, the excellent restaurants, gym, wonderful service and the modern elegance of the hotel more than makes up for its few shortcomings.
