The First Impression: We were here with a group of friends. Having heard about how this was one of the best restaurants of Toronto we were looking forward to a nice evening out with good food and drinks. The hip and trendy Blowfish restaurant was packed with people on this Friday night and the loud music that hit us lent an air of casual-cool to the place.

Décor and Ambience: The ambience was created through a fusion of making use of the classical architectural framework of the building with chic and modish interiors. The tall ceilings, the warm tones on the walls, the big frame windows, the intricate chandeliers that hung from the ceiling, all gave out an aura of a classical feel. This was accentuated by the contrasting, modish look with paneled floors, vivid pink base lighting along the walls and the long stretch of bar, the wooden block tables and chairs and a contrasting red wall. The blend was perfect and created a very happening and cool look. The crowd, the visual presentation and the music definitely lent an air of being the ‘it place’ to Blowfish restaurant.

The Food: The food at Blowfish restaurant is much acclaimed. The menu offered a variety of interesting and delicious choices of nigiri and sashimi, blowfish makimonos, soup and sides, cold and hot plates, sake and wine list. The selection of sake is supposed to be one of the most extensive amongst other restaurants of Toronto.

The service at Blowfish restaurant was flawless. The waiters were extremely attentive and made some great suggestions; all done with a subtlety and flair that deems a mention. The General Manager of the restaurant stepped in to help us with our sake selection which proved to be just great.

And now the food; words don’t do justice to how fresh and delectable the food was. Blowfish restaurant offered an array of maki rolls and we started with a selection of tuna, yellow tail and salmon sashimi, all were extremely fresh and tasty. We also ordered a variety of rolls.

The rolls we tried were the Spicy Tuna Roll with rock shrimp, spicy tuna paste, black sesame seed, hot garlic kewpie tossed rock shrimp tempura; and a Truffle Albacore Roll with spicy albacore tuna paste, tiger shrimp and avocado; topped with garlic chip and truffle oil drizzle. To finish, we ordered a Soft Shell Tartar Roll with soft shell crab, avocado, lettuce, chive, yuzu tobiko, sesame and tartar sauce. It proved to be so amazing that we ended up having two of them.

Still not full, we also tried their standard Spicy Tuna Roll. Each dish proved to be better than the last and we completely enjoyed every bite of our food. We also had and were surprised at how fresh and tasty the fish was. The prices were a bit high-end, but were worth the food.

The Calculated Impression: We came away with a very good impression of the Blowfish Restaurant and Sake Bar. It was easily one of the best restaurants of Toronto and claimed a high place amongst other sushi and sake restaurants Toronto has to offer.

What I liked: The great ambience and décor, the amazing choice of food and sake and the great quality of food and service.

What I didn’t like: The music was a little too loud making it not a place to go to for a good conversation.

Rating: Bombastic
