Boehmer – Toronto, ON: Housed in a former auto garage, Boehmer is run by Chef Paul Boehmer. This spacious restaurant is located on the burgeoning Ossington Avenue in Toronto. Reservations are recommended as the place is packed even on weekdays.

Boehmer has a minimalist décor with furniture made from repurposed wood and concrete floors and walls. The rustic theme of this restaurant starts with the tree trunk at the maître d' station and continues with a long communal table that stretches down the middle of the restaurant and an elm-wood bar along the side.

We dined at Boehmer on a weekday and the place was crowded. The menu offered a decent number of dishes to choose from. The House Baked Bread on the menu is baked to order. Some of the popular dishes at this restaurant are Quebec pan seared foie gras, Lake Nipissing pickerel, Diplomat pudding and lemon grass and passion fruit panna cotta. Boehmer uses locally sourced produce and also distills their own water. We met Chef Boehmer in the restaurant and he was very polite and nice.

I ordered the arctic char while my partner decided to have tenderloin. Our order was served in record time. The portion sizes were satisfactory. The arctic char had a deep flavor and was simply delicious. My partner’s tenderloin was also a big hit. For dessert, we had a cheese plate. This dessert consisted of 6 different cheeses from around Canada. We loved the ones from Quebec.

The wine menu at Boehmer is extensive and includes some of Canada’s best wines. The cocktail list has a number of forgotten classics. A large number of wines were also available by the glass. We sampled some of the Canadian wines and really liked them.

Service was satisfactory. The waiter who served us was very helpful and polite. However, he was extremely busy as he was the only one on the floor. Moreover, he did not get any help from the host, bartender or a third person who seemed to work there. To be honest, this made every other staff look really bad as they just stood back and let the poor guy work the whole restaurant by himself.

Overall, Boehmer is a high end restaurant that serves some wonderful food and retro cocktails. I would definitely visit this restaurant again. Our rating for Boehmer is Bombastic. Had I based it solely on the staff (other than our waiter, it would have gotten a much lower rating..

What I liked: The delicious food and rustic decor

What I didn’t like: The poor service from the majority of the staff

Rating: Bombastic
