W Hotel - Montreal, Quebec

A lot of hype with little to offer.

Located in the famous Banque du Canada building, W Montreal is right in the heart of the city's downtown close to Old Montreal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and more. The hotel known for its trendy décor, spa, restaurant, the W Living Room, and its hot bar, Wunderbar, was a place we had visited before and were curious to visit again. First Impression/Lobby: The lobby at W Montreal was as always, uber trendy and chic. With its voguish pink and lavender décor, high fashionable round lights in beige and dust-gold, the sofa chairs that were plush and comfortable, the interesting and hip curios and tables, the vivid colors and the modish décor, was a pleasure to walk into.

Reception: The reception area of W Montreal followed the décor of the lobby and the check-in was quick and efficient. We were soon on our way to the suite that we had booked with no delays or hitches.

The Suite: For our stay duration at the W Montreal, we had booked the Wow Suite. We were welcomed in by a twenty-foot window that covered the living room below and the bedroom above of the duplex suite. There was an outside terrace balcony with chairs to lounge in and large floral pots that brought in a spot of brightness to the stark white rooms.

The large vivid blue drapes and the colored cushions gave the room a respite from being too stark and brought in an interesting contrast. The living room also had a TV and a large plush and comfortable sofa. While on the small side, the living room of our suite was adequate enough for a short stay.

The small bedroom located upstairs, had a large bed and a crystalline plasma TV suspended from the ceiling near the bed and a DVD player. The bed was made with 350 thread-count linen, feather bed and a soft goose-feather duvet and down-filled pillows.

The tiny bathroom had a rain shower, a basin sink and private toilet stall.

The downside other than the small size, was that the room was set-up for just one person (one pair of slippers, one robe, one set of towels) Having booked for two people and expecting normal attention to detail entailed of a five star hotel, it was frustrating for us to have to take care of an aspect that the staff at W Montreal should have been on top off.

Room Service: The W Montreal was quite unsatisfying. We ordered breakfast which was served late and to add on to it, they charged me for the tomatoes and mushrooms I requested in my omelet, something that I have never come across in all my stays at different five star hotels. Being nickeled and dimed for little things like that makes the W Hotel in Montreal lose a few points in the ranking.

Housekeeping: The housekeeping at W Montreal was not on par with a five star hotel’s service offer. No turndown was done, we found out later we need to request it and our requests for water when unheeded.

Concierge: The concierge Daniel at W Montreal was very capable and professional and gave us some great recommendation. Full points in that department.

Restaurants: The W Montreal had a few dining offers. The Wunderbar Deck offers a bar menu with outdoor seating, while the Wunderbar offered an inside option. The Plateau Lounge offered a unique ‘Living Room’ experience in a great ambience, W Café/Bartini offered great bites and beverages for your morning cuppa and the Ristorante Otto offered chef Yves Lowe’s Italian and Asian cuisine.

Pool/Spa/Activities: The Away spa at W Montreal offered massages, body and beauty treatment and more. There was also Sweat, a fitness center with all the necessary exercise equipment for those looking for a sound workout.

Check-Out: Our check-out at W Montreal was quite a nightmare. The process was slow and to make matters worse, we found a few mistakes on our final bill. A word of advice to all travelers; always check your bill no matter how fancy your hotel may be. It took the W Hotel Montreal a while to get the mistake corrected which was a disappointment when staying at a “luxury hotel” like the W.

Overall Impression The W Montreal charged very steep prices but the level of service and accommodations just did not reach the level to justify the prices. After a short and not so enjoyable stay at the W Montreal we give them a rating of Between Bombastic and Not (and just points from a Not Bombastic rating).
