Sheraton - Algarve, Portugal - Listed as the only 5 Star hotel in The Algarve we decided to drive down from Lisbon to check it out. Our first impression was half-way between great and not so great. It's hard to explain why but maybe from coming from the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon our expectations were quite high.

Our experience at check-in was leading us to think that our impression of not so great might be closer to the truth. Everyone was pleasant but for being a 5 Star hotel the process was slow, cumbersome and a cross between unorganized and unprofessional.

Upon arrival to our room we were becoming more convinced that our "not so great" impression was going to be pretty close to right on. The suite looked and felt a bit run down. The carpet was definitely worn, the walls showed years of fun times being had, and the deck and balcony doors were very sad shape. Plastic patio furniture and 5 Star "luxury" hotel just do not belong in the same sentence let alone in the same property.

The resort itself has a gorgeous setting. Set on a cliff up above the Atlantic Ocean among old pine trees the view from your room or either of the two pools is wonderful.

Room service was adequate as well as the service at the casual restaurants. Service from the concierge was horrible at best; slow, non-responsive, bad advice, poor directions and lack of information. The concierge was a total bomb.

Dinner at their 5 Star seafood restaurant was BOMBASTIC. Excellent food, wine and service made for one exceptional evening. It would be worth spending a night just to be able to experience it.

Unbeknown to us, The Sheraton Algarve caters to families with children and apparently they do an outstanding job marketing it to them; it seemed like over 80% of the guests had children with them. Personally for me, this is not the most relaxing atmosphere. Had I known this, I would probably have skipped this resort.

I did speak to Flavio Bucciarelli the General Manager and he explained he has only been at this location for few months and is aware of the resorts shortcomings and he has an aggressive plan to correct these things. I am confident he will help turn this resort from not so Bombastic to Bombastic in no time at all.
