Great Chinese Dining in Bangkok

Mei Jiang - Bangkok, Thailand: A high-end Chinese restaurant located in the Peninsula, Mei Jiang is an elegant place to dine while enjoying a romantic view of the Chao Phraya River. Headed by renowned Hong Kong chef Kwok Fung, the restaurant specializes in Cantonese cuisine and offers an extensive menu from Dim Sum and Peking duck to exotic Bird’s Nest and imported Abalone.

The design of the restaurant was classy yet unfussy with walls paneled in teak wood and furniture that were also mostly teak, accented with Thai silk. We started dinner with an appetizer of Spiced Lobster and Coconut Roll, and right there, we were impressed! The lobster was juicy, tasty and fresh and the coconut roll was a delightful symphony of flavors. We were so pleased that we went ahead and ordered a feast for our main course: Sautéed Prawn and Peking-style Sweet and Sour Sauce, Stir-fry Chicken with Asparagus and XO Chili Sauce, and Australian Beef with Syzewan Pepper and Spicy Chili Oil. The beautiful food presentation was enough to whet our appetite—clean, colorful and harmonious, and the taste was just as satisfying.

For dessert, I had Chinese Almond Cream with Fresh Lillie Bulb and Egg White. It was served warm, and was oh-so-creamy. The almond flavor really stood out. It was amazingly good. We also had the Mango Pudding which was just okay compared to the fabulous almond cream.

The wine list was extensive and included selections from various regions, both new world and old world. We had a Cloudy Bay, New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc. I found their wine glasses ugly; the first glasses were too small and the second ones were way too large for white wine. I expected more from a restaurant of this caliber.

Service was beyond expectations. They were always one step ahead and ready to take care of our every need. Overall the food was delicious and the service supreme. Dining at the Mei Jiang at the Bangkok Peninsula was a great experience. Bombastic!
