Not Quite Bombastic but Still a Safe Bet

Poppie's Thai Restaurant - Koh Samui, Thailand: Poppies restaurant is located at the Poppies beach resort, which is one of the small hotels on the island. Located near the beach, the restaurant is perfect for casual seaside dining with a tinge of tropical romance. They serve Thai and international cuisine with an emphasis on locally caught (and thus super fresh) seafood. They also have a full vegetarian menu and an extensive selection of wines from all over the world.

The décor is styled like a tropical garden, and there are many seating options to choose from. You can dine in the Ayuthaya-style teak pavilion located by the resort's free-form swimming pool, on the open sided thatched sala covered with an ornate Thai-style roof, or on the beach terrace to get a fabulous view of the sea. Regardless, the moment you sit down and lie back, you’d want nothing more than a cocktail in one hand and succulent shrimps in the other.

We went there for dinner and decided to sit on the beach terrace to enjoy the sea and the starry sky. The staff welcomed us warmly, seated us, gave us the menu, and promptly attended to our orders. We went with their Thai set-dinner for two, called Traditional Kantoke. It included spicy prawn soup with lime leaf, fried chicken with ginger, stir-fried morning glory, charcoal roast duck curry, deep-fried prawn cake with plum sauce, jasmine rice, and a Thai dessert.

I liked the spicy prawn soup the best and the roast duck second, but don’t care much for the fried chicken and prawn cake. I guess, next time, it would be better to just order singles instead of a set menu. Still, for the price, 1,375 Baht for two people, it was a bargin.

Overall, Poppies restaurant has a nice casual atmosphere, good service, great food, and excellent prices. While I can’t rate it bombastic, I would say it is a safe bet for easy, casual dining. Rating, Between Bombastic and Not.

What I liked: Atmosphere, service, spicy prawn soup

What I didn’t like: Set menu as a whole

Rating: Between Bombastic and Not
