Peninsula Hotel – Bangkok, Thailand: Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the five-star, luxury hotel, Peninsula Bangkok, offers stunning, panoramic views of Bangkok and with its complimentary river water shuttle, you are just minutes from the heart of Bangkok and steps away from the Bangkok Sky Train.

First Impression: We had booked the Peninsula’s Rolls Royce transfer in Hong Kong last summer and we knew we just had to book it again for Thailand. After clearing immigration and customs we at Suvarnabhumi Airport we were greeted by the waiting Peninsula staff. The promptly took our bags and escorted us to the waiting Rolls Royce.

Within minutes, our bags were loaded and with a wet towel and cold water in hand, we were set for our 50-minute ride to the five-star Peninsula Hotel Bangkok. This is what I call true Peninsula five-star service.

Reception: As we pulled up to the front door of the Peninsula Bangkok, a slew of bellmen and the hostess greeted us. Not wasting any time, the reception host brought us directly to our suite, a Grand Deluxe Suite, where she gave us a tour and then completed the paperwork. Ten minutes later registration was done and we were enjoying our suite, looking out over Bangkok and sipping on Champagne the hotel had sent up to welcome us. Our Grand Deluxe Suite was just that, grand!

The Suite: The first thing we noticed after the beautiful hardwood floors were the three gigantic windows and the stunning views of Bangkok they provided. Plus, one wall had a large mirror on it so no matter which direction you looked in the room you could see the city unfold below you.

The cream-colored carpet and the accenting golden colored drapes plus the couch, two side chairs, small dining table, desk and half-bath gave you all the comforts of home but with a class and elegance that only the Peninsula can do.

A short walk down hallway took you to the bedroom. Here too, a plush cream-color carpet covered the floors but they were accented by a very light, pale green that oozed warmth and comfort and the standard, plush and luxurious white linens. I could not wait for night to come so I could climb in! In the corner was another large window, it too offer up great views of Bangkok below. Next to the bed were the switches that control everything from the lights and the drapes to Do Not Disturb Light and the TV. Bangkok is the leader in easy to use technology in their rooms!

Next to the bedroom was the over-sized, marble bathroom complete with dual sinks, stand-alone shower, private toilet and deep soaking tub with in-wall television and press button phone answering. Between the bathroom and the large dressing area that was located just outside of it, there were two sets of robes; one light-weight set for day, one heavier set for night, plus the best hotel slippers I have seen in any five-star hotel.

It is easy to say that not only does the Peninsula have the best slippers, they simply have the best rooms, or in this case, the best Grand Deluxe Suites!

Room Service: Room Service was pretty standard; club sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, salads, soups and a few Thai and western main dishes. Prices were reasonable, placing the order was simple and the orders were accurate and on time, each time.

Housekeeping: Housekeeping’s attention to detail and their attentiveness does not go un-noticed. If you ask for something, you only need to ask once and you can be assured your requests are noted and followed on each visit.

Concierge: Great recommendations, super service, friendly and personable is what you can expect from the Concierges, pure Peninsula style.

Restaurant: Bangkok has many great restaurants to choose from but if you want to eat closer to home, i.e., the hotel, you will not be hurting for options: Thiptara brings you traditional, home-style Thai dishes in an outdoor setting, Jesters offers, modern Mediterranean and evening cocktails, Mei Jiang serves up excellent Cantonese, The Lobby offers light meals along with the traditional Peninsula Afternoon Tea, accompanied by live classical music and The Bar and the Pool Bar are both perfect for relaxing and unwinding. Whatever you are in the mood for, The Peninsula has you covered.

Overall Impression If you want true five-star service, in truly five-star accommodations then the Peninsular Hotel in Bangkok is the place to be. Whether it was my call for a band-aid that sent the on-staff, traditional nurse’s uniform clad nurse to my room or the expertise packaging of some artwork that I needed to ship, I was continually surprised by the high level of service that continually surpassed all expectations I had for a luxury, five-star hotel. Simply put, the Peninsula Hotel is Fantastic Bombastic!
