Casual Italian Dining at a Reasonable Price

A Voce Italian Restaurant Columbus Circle – New York, NY: Nestled in the plush Columbus Circle complex overlooking Central Park, A Voce Columbus Circle is a spacious, chic, relaxed and pleasant Italian eatery which derives its menu from simple, home-bred Italian fare and claims to add in some expert twists. We went there for a casual, spur of the moment lunch.

The interior was minimalist and plain. The large windows, stylish white chairs, creatively patterned ceiling and dark wood walls at the entrance along with a nice-looking glass wall bar created a warm, contemporary and unpretentious atmosphere but it wasn’t sharply impressive really. A Voce Italian Restaurant is not in your face luxurious, but comfortable and cozy all the same. Don’t go there expecting a plush ambiance, it’s just good for an informal outing with a bunch of friends.

The restaurant features a fixed price menu at $29.00 for lunch and $35.00 for pre-theater hours (5pm to 6pm) from Monday to Friday. Dinner menu consists of a range of antipasti like pesce crudo, a yellowtail, mandarians, chive and pink peppercorn creation ($16.00) and Cassoncini con Prosciutto di Parma, a swiss chard and crescenza cheese filled fired dough and prosciutto di parma dish. Primi features a range of pastas and Secondi lists a few chops items and seafood preparations. A Voce has an extensive and affordable wine list with half of the varieties on the menu priced at below $90.00.

For appetizers, we shared a the grilled calamari with shelling beans, zucchini and calabrian chilli vinaigrette ($13.00). For our main dish we dug into Pappardelle with braised rabbit, hen of the woods mushrooms, rosemary and parmigiano reggiano dish ($24.00) and Mezzaluna, a taleggio filled pasta with butternut squash, brown butter and sage ($19.00).

It was a very quick lunch and the pasta hit the spot but there was nothing extraordinary about the food, the service or the ambiance. On the flip-side, some items (the Pappardelle and calamari) tasted good and they didn’t really cost us a fortune, so we couldn’t have asked for anything more. I would recommend A Voce only for what we did, a quick casual lunch without expecting a fancy atmosphere or gourmet Italian cuisine.

What I liked: The pasta and the prices

What I didn’t like: Some average dishes, the service and the atmosphere
