Bernardus Lodge - Carmel Valley, CA

California - 1st Class Comfort

Bernardus Lodge - Carmel Valley, California: The Bernardus Lodge is set in scenic Carmel Valley where vineyards and oak trees line its immediate surroundings. It’s the perfect destination for weary city-dwellers who see nothing but concrete on a daily basis. This country lodge has won its fair share of awards, and it’s no surprise why it comes highly recommended. We were in for a real treat!

First Impression/Lobby: The Bernardus Lodge can only be described as “California chic,” cozy and comfortable. It’s a paradox in the sense that it was true five-star but with a very low-key, casual style. The bellman and valet were warm and truly made us feel welcome. Just going into the place, we knew that we were some place special.

Reception: The Reception at the Bernardus was just excellent! Just as warm and welcoming as the bellman and valet, and most of all our check-in was speedy and completely hassle free, which is the way a five-star luxury hotel treats its guests. Our room was ready almost immediately, and we were promptly shown to our room.

Concierge: A knowledgeable Concierge is a tell-tale sign of a truly five-star hotel. The helpful concierge at the Bernardus was efficient and knowledgeable, with recommendations that were perfect and spot on! She was able to book us good tables for our meals out even on short notice, owing much to the reputation of the Bernardus in the area.

The Suite: The suite that we got was a Luxury Spa room with high vaulted ceilings, an off-white carpet and exquisite glass French doors that open to our own private patio (which has a Jacuzzi!). The suite had a relieving effect on us, and I certainly felt like I was on a relaxing vacation! It has more than enough seating in the form of an overstuffed couch and chairs, and it also has a gas fireplace which was a nice touch, making you feel like you really are inside an authentic country lodge. Simply gorgeous!

The bathroom was huge, fitted with dual sinks, a magnificent soaking tub and a fairly large shower stall. My only disappointment with the bathroom is that there wasn't a view of the Valley from the tub, which would have made it perfect! It’s a minor thing, though, as the view from the room and the patio was just amazing: wildflowers and vineyards with the mountains in the background made the perfect setting for enjoying some California sun and wine.

Room Service: Amazing, amazing, amazing! I just can’t say that enough times to justify how excellent the Bernardus Lodge’s Room Service was. The menu was very extensive, but when we didn't find exactly what we were looking for, Room Service let us order from their restaurant Wickets, which served some gorgeous dishes. The gentleman who brought our dinner did an amazing job of setting the table and making sure we had everything exactly as we wanted it. The service was akin to those that you would find in the best restaurants!

Housekeeping: The Bernardus Lodge’s housekeeping was invisible, thorough, and when we had special requests, they never hesitated to say yes...but the best part was that they actually did them! True five-star housekeeping service, if you ask me.

Restaurant: When we didn’t feel like dining in the comfort of out luxury suite, we ate at both the Marinus Restaurant and Wicket, both of which were amazing: the food, wine and service were all excellent and certainly contributed to the fabulous experience we had at the lodge. Overall Impression Everything about Bernardus Lodge was beyond exceptional, from the minute we walked in to the time we checked-out. The only problem we had on this visit was that we didn’t book a few extra days! Fantastic Bombastic.
