Cheri Inn had been a favorite of mine when I lived in the area back in 2000 and I went back recently, specifically so I could write this review.

First thing I noticed when I got there was that nothing has changed in 10+ years. The Inn had basically the same menu (there may have been a few updates, but none that I noticed) and I was instantly hit by palpitations of nostalgia.

The interior’s décor was pretty much the same as it has always been, and though I used to consider it shabby chic, now I pretty much just consider it shabby – badly in need of an update. Either the years have not been kind or maybe I just wasn’t as jaded then as I am now.

Even the service was just as it always has been – average. Though being a homely place for breakfast in Grand Rapids, I naturally didn’t expect service quality to shoot up over the years.

For my breakfast, I had the Granola Blueberry Pancakes with Sausage while my partner had the Grilled Cheese with Egg Sandwich which came with a fruit plate. Both my pancakes and sandwich were just average. The pancakes were dry and definitely not fluffy, while the sandwich was rather bland.

Once a place renowned for a great breakfast or brunch, it has turned into a rather dated place for a safe breakfast. Notice I didn’t say great, but just safe. The Cheri Inn is perfect for those looking for a filling meal without any surprises.

Though the surge of nostalgia was oddly comforting, the quality and ambience had still degraded somewhat and so we rate the Cheri Inn in Grand Rapids Almost Not Bombastic.

What I liked: Homey ambience,

What I didn’t like: Average service, average food, shabby interiors

Rating: Almost Not Bombastic
