Fine Dine, Not so Fine Service

Excelsior Boston, Massachusetts: We had been told that Excelsior was the perfect place for excellent American cuisine, five-star service and a huge wine list.

When we arrived at Excelsior our table was ready but we still had the option of having a cocktail in bar on the main floor or going directly to our table on the second floor. We opted for dining room and the host escorted us to our table that was on busy corner of the restaurant.

We were greeted promptly and were offered cocktails as we looked at the menus. The menu was impressive. With dishes like Maine Lobster Tail Schnitzel, Juniper Roasted New Zealand Venison, Ozark Mountain Kurobuta Pork Rack and Skillet Seared Atlantic Swordfish and sides like Black Truffle Whipped Potatoes and Sweet Potato Steak Fries it was easy to see why this place was recommended.

The wine menu was just as impressive. With hundreds of bottles to choose from we were sure we had everything we needed to make the dinner complete and the evening memorable.

Unfortunately there one thing on the menu that was missing, the one thing I wished we could have ordered, good service.

After our orders were taken, we did not see our waiter again. Every once in a while someone would stop by to refill our water or wine glasses but more often than not, the wait staff buzzed by us. More than once, we had to get up from our table to get our wine or water bottle that was on the adjacent counter.

It is easy for me to say that I was shocked with the total lack of service. The restaurant is beautiful and reeks of class and style, but the service was just non-existent.

Yes, the food was good but the disappointing service over-shadowed any enjoyment we had from our dinner.

After dinners like this, I like to ask myself, would I go back, and in this case, it is easy to answer, no.

***UPDATE Feb 2009*** The restaurant has closed.
