Kafé Leopold in Washington, DC is situated off the beaten path in Cady’s Alley, an alleyway off Georgetown’s bustling M Street. A European café, this restaurant serves Austrian fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Kafé Leopold had a distinct European vibe to it with its contemporary décor, floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor patio. Indoor seating was also available. A large selection of pastries and desserts were displayed in a bakery case inside the café.
This café in Georgetown was recommended to us by the concierge at the W Hotel. We were on the lookout for a good breakfast place. Needless to say, we came here with high expectations. But we knew we were in trouble the moment we had a look at their breakfast menu. The menu listed a couple of egg dishes, yogurt parfait, waffles and a soufflé and of course the customary pastry basket. And that was it!
We ordered scrambled eggs with ham and cheese (which was a feat in itself since they were reluctant to do it), the yogurt parfait and granola with fresh berries and a chocolate croissant. All of these were just dull and plain, there was nothing impressive about them. In fact, none of the dishes even lived up to what I would normally rate as “mediocre”.
Overall, I can honestly say (and I do tell the truth always) that this was the worst breakfast I have had in recent (and maybe even long term) memory. Moreover, Leopold’s was hard to find. Since I had such a bad experience I am hesitant to even let you know where to find it. But it’s located on the even numbered side of the street (even though its street address is 3315) and down a flight of stairs in Cady's Alley.
We later found out that Leopold’s is primarily an Austrian restaurant. Now, we don’t hold any grudge against Austria or their food per se, but the menu was just too small for what we were hoping for. The only nice thing about our breakfast at this café in Georgetown was the atmosphere, which was quite bright and cheery. Based on my experience here, I give Kafé Leopold a rating of Almost Not Bombastic.
What I liked: The bright and cheery atmosphere
What I didn’t like: The plain food and the limited number of choices
Rating: Almost Not Bombastic
