Kata Robata – Houston, TX Situated near the crossroads of Highway 59 and Kirdby, Kata Robata is one of Houston’s best sushi and Japanese tapas restaurant. Sushi in Houston has never been better with Executive Chef Manabu “Hori” Horiuchi manning the reins. His exclusive menu of unique Japanese cuisine will take you on a gastronomic journey like no other.

Upon entering the restaurant, you will be greeted with a soothing and casual atmosphere, accentuated by the dim lights. Kata Robata’s décor echoes Japanese tradition with simple chairs and booths. The menu is stocked with a good selection of sushi, sashimi (which is very fresh, though thinly sliced), a great variety of rolls and a lot of creative items to choose from. Rolls were priced at the $13-18 range, while sushi ranged from $2.50 – 5.00 a piece. Wine is also served, though they mainly offer New World wines.

For dinner, we had the following:

First up, we had the Houston Roll, which was comprised of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, avocado and mango. It was very good and the best description we have for it is that it was a mouthful of goodness. A promising start to our journey for sushi in Houston

The Texas Hamachi Roll, which is made of yellowtail, spicy tuna, fresh water eel, fried shrimp, yuzu juice, jalapenos and sea salt was enjoyable but a bit too citrusy for our tastes. The jalapeno peppers gave it a good kick though.

The third roll we ordered was the Longhorn Roll, a dish made of fried shrimp, fresh water eel, avocado, spicy mayo, three kinds of tobiko and unagi sauce. Now, this was extremely good and we consider this the highlight of our meal.

We also had the Salmon and Soft Shell Crab; it was tasty though not too great. It’s a dish made out of soft shell crab, salmon, Korean BBQ powder, sesame seeds, pepper, togarashi and micro greens.

Finally for dessert, we had the Red Bean Ice Cream and Coconut Glaze with a Donut, and Black Sesame Crème Brulée with Green Tea Ice Cream. Both desserts were great and were a nice cap to our meal.

Service all throughout dinner was excellent. The presentation of the food was just fair, however this was made up for by the excellent taste. In all, we had a great dinner and recommend Kata Robata to anyone in the area looking for fine sushi in Houston. Our rating? A resounding Bombastic!

What I liked: Menu selection, the food, the service, the classy and casual atmosphere

What I didn’t like: food presentation could be better.

Rating: Bombastic!
