Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge – Chicago, Illinois: We decided to try out the Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge for a quick lunch before catching a movie at the AMC Movie Theater which was located at the same building and was right next door. A contemporary Japanese restaurant, Niu’s interiors felt like a hotel or airport lounge with its ambient lighting, leather lounge chairs, and mostly brown, beige and wood furnishings. You can tell that they were trying too hard to create a cool and trendy atmosphere but instead came across more as an upscale food court in a corporate building. Perhaps the best thing that can be said about Niu Sushi Lounge is its convenient location beside the theater, which makes it an easy choice for moviegoers.

We decided to try some of their fusion rolls which had cheesy names like Mello Yellow, Sexy Mexican, Aloha Albacore and Pink Lady. It seemed to me that they spent too much time on trying to be cute and clever and did not spend enough time on preparing high quality, good tasting sushi. The fish was not fresh at all and the combinations of the maki did not complement each other, ruining the flavor (or lack thereof) of the fish. On top of that, the prices were high especially for the quality of the food and the mediocre service—it was in-line with the rest of our experience, grossly disappointing!

The only reason to visit Niu Sushi Lounge and Restaurant is if you are headed to or from AMC and want a quick bite to eat or a cool drink, but other than that, there are way much better Japanese and Sushi restaurants in Chicago so don’t waste your money on this. My rating for Niu Sushi is definitely between bombastic and not.
