Pravda – New York, NY: If you want a sneak peak of Moscow’s nightlife right here in New York, head to the innately Russian underground caviar bar Pravda New York at Lafayette St. We didn’t eat here, just went for a round of after dinner drinks, but came back mighty impressed nevertheless. The tiny, unassuming hole in the wall is located downstairs and once you walk inside the confines of this outlandish hangout, you’ll be forgiven for mistaking you’ve landed in a bar in the narrow by-lanes of Russia. The small booths, low ceiling and red lighting only add to the bohemian appeal.

Pravda New York was packed and bustling with a crowd comprising mainly of patrons in their 20’s and 30’s. The setting in keeping with the youngish crowd was loud but thankfully not boisterous and obnoxious. Even though Pravda New York was crammed, the waitresses were surprisingly attentive and prompt in their service and did an impressive job of taking orders and ensuring they were served in a speedy manner.

Though they have uber-stylish cocktails and an inspiring martini spread, the clear favourites with regulars are the ginger and horseradish based vodka concoctions. The Caviar Martini- a cucumber and black caviar creation is also a rage along with the smart Russian waitresses (with delightful European accents) who seem to know their drinks impressively well. Prices are average for a New York bar- example $11.50 for a Hendricks Gin and Tonic. Patrons can bag super happy hour deals (the buy one get one kinds) from Monday-Wednesday from 5PM TO 7PM at $6-7 a drink!

Overall, Pravda New York isn’t a place where you’d normally find me hanging around, but it’s definitely a place I would recommend you visit at least once for its kitsch cross-continental ambiance and a hip, young vibe. The bar incorporates painstaking details to transport you to the cobbled streets of Russia.

Pravda New York is Bombastic!

What I liked: The hip underground setting, the quick service and an impressive range of Russian cocktails, martinis and vodkas.

What I didn’t like: The slightly crammed and loud environment

Rating: Bombastic
