The brainchild of New York’s renowned hotelier prince Ian Schrager, the Private Roof Club at The Gramercy is an exclusive ‘club and garden’ space that fuses the concepts of London’s private gentlemen’s club and the bustle of a Viennese coffee-house. Inspired by the ‘roof-top garden life’ that came into vogue at the turn of the century in New York, this unique space at The Gramercy with its retractable roof found 16-stories above the city is an epitome of an elite private salon or drawing room. With all the great reviews we have come across about The Gramercy and the Private Roof Club, the idea of a venture here held great promise.

The First Impression: We visited the restaurant for breakfast during our stay at The Gramercy. Walk in and be ready to be struck by the sheer style and beauty of the space. There is a distinct classical style about the place that is mixed with a modern chic design that results in a very interesting design concept.

Décor and Ambience: Gorgeous, exclusive and expensive; the restaurant at The Gramercy exuded an aura of modish style. The sublime Renaissance colors on the walls were right out of the artist Julian Schnabel’s color palette, the dazzling and intricate ceiling light evoking the visuals of the chandelier from the movie Blade-Runner, magnificent paintings from Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst decorating the walls and being changed periodically; the ambience and décor spoke of rich elegance and the exclusivity of The Gramercy was apparent in every design aspect.

The Food: The Private Roof Club at The Gramercy offered breakfast, lunch, supper, cocktails and weekend brunch for its residential guests and special guests. The food on its own does not merit any special mention or rave reviews; those were evoked from the terrific atmosphere and service that this restaurant at The Gramercy offered; almost like having a cup of regular Darjeeling tea at the Buckingham Palace!

The Service: The service at the Private Roof Club at The Gramercy was impeccable. The servers knew the subtle art of being able to serve without appearing to be too intrusive or breathing down your neck; to be invisible, yet at hand.

The Calculated Impression: The experience at the restaurant at The Gramercy left us wanting to go back and enjoy the open roof top when the sun was shining and warming every one’s backs, but that didn’t quite work out. We really enjoyed the offer of the great ambience that was meant for relaxing and being pampered. Though the prices were steep, it was worthy of the surrounding and the service. If you are looking to take someone out on a special date or just looking to really pamper yourself, the Private Roof Club at The Gramercy is the place to be at.

What I liked: The great décor and ambience and the stellar service.

What I didn’t like: The prices... sky high to match the setting.

Rating: Between Bombastic and not.
