The Chop House – Grand Rapids, MI: Located across the street from the famous Amway Grand Hotel, the Chop House is one of the swankiest restaurants in Grand Rapids rivaling the Amway’s 1913 Room fine dining restaurant. First-class elegance defines the restaurant’s décor with its floor-to-ceiling pillars, black granite bar, framed oil prints hung on walls, gold upholstered seats, black chairs, and white linen tablecloths. The staff inspects every piece of silverware and every piece of crystal with an almost obsessive detail, checking for spots and making sure that each piece shines immaculately. On the lower level of the dining area is the dessert and cigar lounge as well as the wine cellar, displaying an extensive collection of vintage reds.

To start, we had Chilled Oysters on the Half Shell and Pepper and Coriander Crusted Tuna followed by the House Salad. For the main course, we opted for the Fillet Mignon with side orders of Mashed Potatoes, Broccoli and Spinach. While I enjoyed the fillet, I wouldn’t say it was extraordinarily amazing enough to justify its heart-stopping high cost. Needless to say, I was expecting a lot more in terms of presentation, taste and innovation especially from a restaurant that presents itself as high-end. We finished off the night with a warm, moist and decadent Chocolate Melt Cake and an equally rich and extravagant Crème Brulee. Both desserts were a satisfying ending to a relatively good dinner.

While most of the service was topnotch, there was one annoying instance when a server came and dropped our dinner plate on our table and dashed off even before we were done with our salads. This was after serving the salads right on the heels of our oysters and tuna; it seemed to us that they were in a hurry to get us out as if we were eating in some fast food chain and not an upscale restaurant. After we told our waitress that we wanted to enjoy our dinner without feeling rushed, the service slowed down to the right timing as it should have been from the start.

As mentioned, prices are on the high side especially for Grand Rapids. While it is wonderful to have the option of another fine dining restaurant in Grand Rapids, the Chop House definitely has some maturing to do. Overall, the dinner was great but the less-than-extraordinary main course and initial service mishap, plus the unjustified cost of the whole experience just keep it from being bombastic. My rating for the Chop House in Grand Rapids: Between Bombastic and Not.

What I liked: Atmosphere, Chocolate Melt Cake

What I didn’t like: Feeling rushed at a high-end restaurant

Rating: Between Bombastic and Not
