We arrived on time but had to wait almost an hour for a table. Understandable, since the place was packed, but I wondered, what is the purpose for making a reservation then? Despite the wait, I can honestly say it was worth it. The décor was comfortable and had a trendy vibe, though I was there for the sushi, not the atmosphere. Suffice it to say, Uchi did not disappoint. Each dish we tried was fabulous, which says a lot as I was comparing it to sushi I’ve had at the top Japanese restaurants around the world. Here at Uchi there were some odd combinations; tuna and goat cheese, grapes and shrimp tempura. Really? But somehow they all seemed to work together.

What we ordered:

Hama Chili - A tasty dish with a kick, made with baby yellowtail, ponzu, Thai chili and orange supreme.

Madai Sashimi – Japanese sea bream

Akami Sashimi – Tuna loin

Biendo – A succulent tempura spring roll with spicy vinaigrette and grapes. Odd combination, but worked perfectly.

Zero Sen – A sumptuous mix of yellowtail, avocado, shallot, yuzu, golden roe and cilantro.

Maguro Sashimi and Goat Cheese – Another seemingly strange mix made of bigeye tuna, fuji apple, pumpkin seed oil and goat cheese, the overall result was just oh, so good.

Normally, when out for sushi, I don’t usually order any meat dishes; however, our waiter strongly recommended the Wagyu ribs, which we took his advice and ordered. As with the sushi, the dish was divine. It was tender, juicy, and marvelous to say the least.

It was mentioned earlier that we waited almost an hour before were seated, but this was because the place was packed and not a reflection of Uchi’s service. Once we were seated, service was great and the staff were very attentive. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and was there to help us pick the right things to order.

Overall, I can honestly say, without a doubt, that Uchi Suchi restaurant is home to the best sushi in Austin. If you love sushi, then this is a must visit. The restaurant offers dishes that are innovative, fresh and simply divine. Though it’s on the pricey side, it is definitely worth it. We rate it a resounding Bombastic!

What I liked: The service, the ambience, the food

What I didn’t like: A little on the pricey side

Rating: Bombastic!
