Casual Dining, Fun Atmosphere in Florence
Restaurant Category : Italian
Trattoria Za Za (aka Za Za's) - Florence, Italy: Casual, crowded, lively with great food at a reasonable price. Just minutes from Piazza Republica and the Duomo, Za Za's is touristic favorite.
This is the perfect place to go with friends, to meet new friends or just to sit back and people watch. They have seating both in-doors and out. I recommend sitting outside, especially if you like to people watch, there's a lot see!

Za Za's menu is wide and varied with great classics and a few unexpected dishes. Be sure to try the three soup special. It is delicious and a great way to experience pappa al pomodoro and ribollita, two traditional soups from the region.
As your main course I recommend the fillet of beef with a peppercorn and cognac sauce, it's so tender it melts in your mouth.
If you like wine, and who doesn't, bring a bottle or two of your own that you have picked up along your travels in the Chianti region. This is a great, casual place to enjoy them. There is a minimal corkage fee but it is worth it.
As with most places in Florence, Italy, reservations are suggested.

My husband and I are "gourmet" travelers, We truly enjoy exploring new flavors and local specialties, but most of all we pride ourselves in finding places that serve "authentic" food (Authentic = dishes that have not been modified to accommodate the "tourist's taste", made with fresh ingredients daily, hence not always available). This was our third time in Florence. Over the years, we have tried all the restaurants, trattorias, osterias and enotecas suggested by our various hosts: Za Za's has always come out at the very top.
Not only it fits our "authentic food" criteria, but also:
choice inside or outside seating, with great people watching possibilities either way.
great food regardless of budget - order coffee or a full blown meal here you truly get exactly what you order. Great food and variety, nice sized portions, daily specials to die for.
they slice the cold-cuts to order. No pre-sliced/ dry/bagged/pre-assembled dishes here!
the staff does speak English and they do have an English menu for the "Italian challenged"
Top suggestions: green pepper steak, Florentine steak, bresaola appetiser, scaloppine al limone, tripe (yes it's really good here), baccala' alla Fiorentina (cod), and the trio of tuscan soups.
Keep in mind Florence is not exactly near the sea and salt-water fish is not part of the traditional cuisine (unlike sea-side towns such as Livorno, La Spezia, Genoa etc.). Although seafood is served everywhere in Florence, your best bet for "authentic" cuisine fish-wise are cod-based dishes ( dried and salted, usually called baccala' or stoccafisso)
Desserts are excellent but do not get ice cream here as it's not home made. Go to "Perche' No'" (Why Not in English) on Via Dei Tavolini near the Duomo, one of the few truly artisan gelaterie in town (90% of them say gelato artigianale but they don't make it on site). Here's the link for easy directions www.percheno.firenze.it It's only a 10 minute walk away from the restaurant if you walk slowly.

Just returned from Florence. Za Za was wonderful and the best steak I've ever eaten. It's called the Za Za Florentine steak. My daughter had a pasta with meat sauce. Best meat sauce I've ever tasted.
