Vecia Cavana restaurant in Venice is located a short walk from Ca Sagredo Hotel where we were staying during this trip to Venice. Frequented by locals and tourists alike, this Venice Restaurant has a comfortable, at home feeling. Originally a boathouse, Vecia Cavana has kept its stone columns, brick arches and mooring hooks intact to recreate the atmosphere of Venice.

Vecia Cavana has an elegant décor with white table clothes, elegant wood chairs and upholstery. The terracotta tiled floors and mustard coloured walls of this refined and contemporary restaurant make it an ideal venue to enjoy an incredible meal. Exposed bricks and beams add to the historical feel of this Venetian restaurant.

This brightly lit restaurant serves traditional Venetian recipes and original Italian dishes. Appetizers are presented creatively and consist of sardine, vegetables from the buffet, beef capriccio with rocket salad, sliced Parma ham and melon, and more. The menu is full of fish and pasta items. Some of these are spaghetti with cuttle fish, spaghetti with clams, taglioni with lobster sauce, spaghetti with scampi and mixed fish soup. Some of the risottos available are scampi and mushroom, seafood and basil and scallops.

Venetian style pasta and bean soup, taglioni with vegetables, baked lasagne, macaroni carbonara style with egg and bacon, grilled sirloin, beef tenderloin with sauce, calf liver Venetian style and veal make up the meat dishes at Vecia Cavana. However, it is evident that the main focus is on local seafood as the menu sports a number of fish items like cuttle fish, Venetian style sea bass, grill monk fish, grill tuna and lots more.

My partner and I started our dinner with the calamari with rocket salad. I loved this warm and tender appetizer. However, my dining partner did not like this dish that much, finding it a bit bland and chewy. (Some people just don’t have any taste!) For the main course, my partner ordered the spaghetti vongole (clams) in white sauce, while I opted for the spaghetti with scampi and tomatoes. Both pastas were fresh, tasty, fulfilling and a testament to true Venetian cooking. After our pasta, we shared a small but delicious cheese plate. The small size of the cheese plate allowed us to save room for a delectable tiramisu afterwards.

Vecia Cavana has an extensive wine list with prestigious vintage bottles and wines from different regions of Italy.

The gracious staff consisted mainly of locals and in fact, some have been working there for decades. The service was attentive. However, towards the end of our meal, the whole focus of the staff shifted to closing the restaurant and getting it ready for the next day.

Overall, our experience at this Venice Restaurant was very nice. Vecia Cavana is a place I would recommend to those who are looking for an upscale, yet casual Venetian or seafood restaurant. Even though this Venice Restaurant does not quite reach the level of Bombastic, I don’t think you would be disappointed if you dined here.

What I liked: Excellent food

What I didn’t like: The indifferent service towards the end of our meal

Rating: Between Bombastic and Not
